Russian River Brewing Company- Annual Release of Pliny the Younger

Russian River Brewing Company Pliny the Younger (imperial IPA, 11% ABV) is one of the most talked about, sought after beer amongst beer geeks.  It is only available for 2 weeks (draft only) each year.  It gets a 100 score out of 100 on both RateBeer.com and BeerAdvocate, and has been at the top of every beer list in existence.  Only recently has The Alchemist Heady Topper knocked it out of first place on the BeerAdvocate top 250 beers of the world list.

The brewery, located in Sonoma County, CA, will tap Younger at 11 AM on February 1st, and it will be available for 14 days until Valentine’s Day.  A certain amount is allotted for each day to make sure that they will have it on tap at least part of each day during this period.

Here are the notes from the brewery:

Pliny the Younger, the man, was Pliny the Elder’s nephew and adopted son. They lived nearly 2,000 years ago! Pliny the Elder is our Double IPA, so we felt it was fitting to name our Triple IPA after his son. It is almost a true Triple IPA with triple the amount of hops as a regular I.P.A. That said, it is extremely difficult, time and space consuming, and very expensive to make. And that is why we don’t make it more often! This beer is very full-bodied with tons of hop character in the nose and throughout. It is also deceptively well-balanced and smooth.Elder

At one time, the brewery did fill growlers of Younger, but now it is draft only, and you can wait in line a long time to get one.  I have had the opportunity to enjoy some bottles of Pliny the Elder, which is an incredible brew, but I have never had the opportunity to enjoy a Younger.

Philadelphia and Colorado are the closest areas to Michiana that get any distribution for Russian River Beers, so unfortunately it is not easy for us Michiana-ites to get a hold of RR beers.

Here is a video to find out what all the Pliny the Younger hype is exactly about.
