Rainbo Lanes is turning blue.
The familiar pink exterior of the 50-year-old bowling alley, now under new ownership, has stood out if you travel Middlebury Street in eastern Elkhart. It’s not everyday you see a pink building.
The new owners wanted the name to stick out, though, not the color, so they’re painting it in more sober shades — light blue with dark blue accents. I knew they were going to re-paint the structure, but caught my first glimpse of the transition Wednesday when I happened to be driving by:
“It definitely tells people there’s a change going on,” said John Goodman, one of the new owners. The painting started about a week ago, he said, with a finish date dependent on the weather.
Look here for a story I did last April about Rainbo, soon after Goodman and Bill Burke bought the 50-year-old bowling alley.
Look here for an earlier blog post about plans to paint the distinctive pink building.
The original pink is fading, peeling in spots, and the blue is definitely a step up. Many more changes are afoot and sports reporter Steve Krah will be doing a more thorough story in the near term. Stay tuned.
