I finally had the opportunity of shooting a gun for my first time this past weekend!
Not at anyone, of course, but at simple targets at the Elkhart Rifle and Pistol Club.
I had wanted to go for awhile and was really excited when my boyfriend and his dad invited me to go with them.
Let me tell you that putting a gun (that is NOT used in a Nerf war) in your hand is a little weird at first. I learned how to load it and when I finally put my finger on the trigger, I began to shake a little. After firing my first shot, I began to relax and it got easier and easier to where it finally became routine.
Load, aim, breathe in, hold and fire.
My first ten shots were a little off to the left from the middle, but they definitely were not bad for my first time even holding a gun. My second target I tried to hit 7, 8 and 9 on either side and also smack dab on the 10. I was pretty successful at creating a straight line all the way across but I could see that I was certainly stronger on my left side.
I know with heated gun control debates people are hesitant, but I had a lot of fun and it was a learning experience. The Elkhart Rifle and Pistol Club is located on a side street off of Cassopolis St, right across from Red Lobster and Olive Garden. I believe you have to be a member to go and you can bring guests, but I’m not positive on that one. We provided our own ear plugs, but it is also recommended you wear other safety equipment like eye wear.
If you are interested in going to a shooting range but are not a member, there is also Midwest Gun and Range. The cost is about $12 per person to shoot, they offer classes and you can buy safety equipment there as well. There are also some ranges in the South Bend/Mishawaka area.
I would absolutely recommend going and trying it out! It’s a cool opportunity and is something I personally think people should know how to do.
