Journalism is about learning on the job

Granger Community Church collects items for food drop

I had a busy morning Saturday covering the GCC Food Drop in Elkhart. As always I had photos to create, but I had planned on producing a video for etruth.com as well.

I learned late Friday about the newest, shiniest video whiz bang…the Vine, which allows for six second video clips, a la twitter, to be posted. SIX SECONDS? Yep. That is what our attention span has been collectively reduced to apparently. So I quickly downloaded the app and shot a quick snippet at the food drop to post to my twitter feed. You can follow me on twitter @fuji400. I need a little tutorial as I found out. The app is set to take video with the camera in a vertical position. I usually shoot video in a horizontal position. I deleted the first post as it was sideways…no one needs to tilt their head to view a video, even if it’s only for six seconds. Here is my first Vine post. Not my best work by far, but it was on the fly. I will continue to play with the app and find cool ways to share life in Elkhart County with readers six seconds at a time.

In the end…journalism involves a lot of learning on the job, perpetually in fact. We have a deadline all day, everyday these days. I enjoy learning about video, social media and such, but I still love taking a simple still photograph that makes you smile.

Great article! I am fortunate to have been raised by a pack of life-long learners. I was shocked at my first “grown-up” job to discover that some people actively seek to stagnate and avoid any chance to learn, grow or change because it might “change” their lives. In fact it does change your life, but for me, it has always been for the better. There are so many amazing things in the world to see, hear and learn about!

I couldn’t agree more Jill. If I stopped learning when I left school I would have been unemployable in about three years. That is how fast the technology of my industry is changing. For now I feel I can keep up. It will be interesting to see how I feel about that in another 10-15 years. Hope you are well.
