b on the River opened in October 2010 in downtown Elkhart as a cafe, bakery and gift shop.
SugaRush Desserts opened in 2012 on the east side of Elkhart and built a great business for its wedding cakes, cupcakes and cookies.
And now they’re combining and SugaRush will become the newest part of downtown.
Liz Naquin Borger, owner of b on the River, announced that she’s acquiring SugaRush from Randy and Peggy Lipps. Megan Williams, the talented baker and decorator around whom SugaRush was built, will be in a leadership role in the new arrangement.
“I knew of Megan and her amazing abilities before b on the River ever started,” Borger said. “Nobody compares to what Megan can create.”
Williams opened her business with some other partners, who were later bought out by Peggy and Randy Lipps.
The owners started talking and agreed to form a new team. “The two combined is going to be a better fit,” Borger said.
By October, Williams will move to the b on the River location at 333 NIBCO Parkway. For a few months, the location at 5150 Verdant St., Elkhart, will remain open.
A delivery truck will be available to deliver catering orders, as well as wedding cakes, Borger said.
b on the River adjoins McCarthy’s on the Riverwalk and both have a patio along the river. Now there will be Williams’ cookies, cupcakes and specialty cakes available. But she’s not the only baker. Emil Romnow of Denmark is making apple tarts and almond pastries, among other things. b on the River also still offers gelato made in the restaurant.
That’s on the food front, but the new manager is news too. Wilma McDougle, who worked at the Elkhart Truth for many years, is overseeing the business. “I’m thrilled to be joining the team at b on the River and look forward to making sure our customers feel welcomed and received in utmost service,” she said in a press release.
What’s this all mean? I expect that b on the River will offer some amazing new items and refine the experience for those going to eat there. I’m not a regular, I’ll admit, but I want to become more of one because of these two talented women. In addition a chef team is led by Robert Windsor and he’s working with Charu Pant and Adam Weber.
Elkhart County has plenty of good bakeries. But this collaboration is likely to result in some good things, particularly for downtown Elkhart.
