The Original Vesuvio’s Pizza location in Elkhart closed more than a year ago but is getting ready to reopen downtown.
Owner Josh Royer has been remodeling a building a block from Main Street at the corner of Second and Marion streets. It happens to be across the street from the Elkhart Truth offices. I’ve heard people expressing their intent to be very good customers.
Royer has been remodeling the building for a number of months and hopes to open this fall. Vesuvio’s will be in the name somehow and it’ll likely be Primo Vesuvio’s, he said. The phone number will still be 574-262-3305.
Vesuvio’s started in Elkhart decades ago. The business was sold and at various points new owners took the name and operated locations around Elkhart and South Bend. Royer operated “The Original” location with the name Vesuvio’s Pizza at Parkmor Plaza on the northwest side of Elkhart for the last 15 years.
Business faded there. “It was OK when the plaza was full, Miles (Lab) was there and the factories,” he said. But when Miles and then Bayer was gone and the plaza got
less more empty, he looked for other options.
He’s planning to open at 201 W. Marion with a menu that includes pizza, pasta, sandwiches, salads and some fried items such as mozzarella sticks. He may add gluten-free and whole wheat items to the menu as well, he said. He hopes to be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and offer delivery.
Volcano Pizza and Pizza Hut have locations in or near Easy Shopping Place east of downtown, but I think this Vesuvio’s will do well. What do you think?
