McDonald’s has a new breakfast sandwich, but is the Egg White Delight McMuffin actually that delightful?
I’m a sucker for breakfast sandwiches. I usually quaff a green smoothie for breakfast, but sometimes I want a mix of bread, cheese, egg and meat.
I usually also mutter at the people turning in and out of two McDonald’s I pass on my commute to work, but that’s another story.
But the new McMuffin that’s a shadow of its former self called to me. It said, “I’m a healthier breakfast sandwich. And I’m on sale.”
You can get coupons online to get one for $1, but they’re also on special for $3.50 for two at some Elkhart County McDonald’s.
McDonald’s is touting that it has 50 fewer calories (250 rather than 300) than the original and has 5 fewer grams of fat (seven grams rather than 12).
And that’s good. Less fat and fewer calories is good. But how’s the flavor?
The cheese, which is white to match the rest of the sandwich, is “white cheddar*.” But the asterisk means that it’s pasteurized and processed. That means I could put it in the drawer with my pet hamburger and it’d barely age.
And I happen to like egg yolks. And they aren’t bad for you. They just aren’t. Nutritionists are now saying so.
But at least McDonald’s doesn’t ask you if you want yellow eggs or white eggs like an employee did at Subway when it unveiled the breakfast sandwiches there.
I’ll cheer that McDonald’s is offering healthier options, but if you really want to make this better for you, add a handful of spinach, either to the top of the sandwich or to the egg whites. And offer something other than processed, pasteurized cheese, which is barely food.
Still, you can have two Egg White Delights for fewer calories and less than half the fat of a Sausage, Egg & Cheese McGriddles.
In other McDonald’s news, the restaurants in northern Indiana southwest Michigan around Elkhart and South Bend that are open 24 hours will offer a new late-night menu. From midnight to 4 a.m. you’ll be able to order items from the breakfast and dinner menus. The new menu launches Wednesday, June 5, according to a release from Villing & Co., which does public relations work for Mcdonald’s.
There’s some talk of whether McDonald’s could offer breakfast throughout the day, but as Alix Steele of Bloomberg News points out, it’d be difficult to manage the process in the highly automated McDonald’s kitchens.
