January is a tough time to run a small business, but that’s not why Pop Culture Soda Store in Elkhart isn’t open.

Owner Brian Jamison said he had an open lease at 124 S. Main St. Someone else wanted the building. So he closed.

But as he put it, “One door has closed. Three doors have opened.”

He doesn’t have a storefront right now, but he has coolers in:

• Mini Delights Bake Shoppe, 217 S. Main St., Elkhart,

• Ignition Music, 120 E. Washington St., Goshen

• A candy store in Carmel, Ind. called Simply Sweet Shoppe.

He just put the coolers in the Elkhart County businesses, but had one in Carmel in October.

He was adjusting the store at Ignition Music on Wednesday. “I feel good,” he said, noting that the timing was good because of how slow January and February tend to be.

He said the storefront was a test run. He’s excited about the new locations and another possible storefront.

But for now, you can get your root beer and other specialty sodas with your red velvet cupcake or Velvet Underground album.
